The Fulton Steamboat Inn is certainly one of Lancaster’s most unique full service hotels; but why a steamboat in the middle of Pennsylvania Dutch Country? Because the man most responsible for progress in “propelling boats by steam” was born here!

Robert Fulton was born in a farmhouse just a few miles away from the Fulton Steamboat Inn in 1765. Fulton is credited with turning the steamboat into a commercial success and transforming the world’s transportation history.

The Inn was recently acquired and renovated by local hoteliers. Some of the more notable recent improvements include the complete redesign of 80 guest rooms with beautiful Victorian and Nautical themes. Each room features large flat panel TV’s, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and more. According to Peter Chiccarine, the hotels Captain and General Manager, “Our guest’s love the new look and feel of the rooms. Maintaining an historic look while providing modern comforts was our goal and I’m confident, based on our guest’s reactions, that we accomplished this goal.”

Another significant change to the property has been to the restaurant. Chef Michael Sayers has created an ambience and menu suitable for both intimate dinners and families on the go. Huckleberry’s Restaurant opened in December 07’ replacing the Inn’s previous restaurant. Chef Michael said he felt it was important to create a menu that would be equally appealing to both guests visiting Lancaster and locals. “Our vision was to provide good, wholesome, well known Lancaster County entrees done with a bit of flair. Based on the comments coming from our guests I’d say we hit our target.” Huckleberry’s is open daily for breakfast and dinner. Reservations are suggested.

Lunch is served in Huckleberry’s tavern, a small quaint wonderfully themed nautical lounge. The menu is entirely Chef Michael influenced but has certainly been tailored for those hoping to find more pub like fare. Chef Michael is quick to point out that although the menu in the tavern is filled with sandwiches and lite fare, guests are welcome to order off of the full menu from Huckleberry’s restaurant.

After spending a few days aboard the Fulton you truly begin to get the sense of what it must be like to cruise aboard a steamboat, only with all of the luxuries of modern day life. Beautiful indoor pool and whirl pool, walking trail surrounding a pond filled with large exotic koi, a themed nautical playground all surrounded by beautiful Amish farmlands; what more could you ask for! Whether you’re interests are shopping, sightseeing or simply kicking back, the Fulton Steamboat Inn is where your adventure begins.
